For one day in Yerevan, start with a walk through Circular Park, continue to Republic Square and the National Gallery, then choose the Cascade or Matenadaran for your final cultural stop. This route keeps the day focused on central sights and gives you a choice between outdoor sculpture and art spaces or a manuscript museum.

  • Start: Circular Park.
  • Central stop: Republic Square and the National Gallery of Armenia.
  • Choose one: the Cascade’s outdoor sculpture spaces and galleries, or the Matenadaran museum.
  • Plan around: opening patterns differ by day, and some venues close on Mondays or holidays.

The Cascade and Matenadaran offer different kinds of stops: the Cascade combines outdoor sculpture spaces with art galleries, while Matenadaran is a museum. Choose based on your interests and the day’s opening schedule.

The Cascade

The Cascade has 572 steps. Its bottom-to-top distance is 302 metres, rising to 450 metres from the bottom to the top of the Monument Terrace. The Cafesjian Sculpture Garden is always open, and the Escalator Gallery is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00.

The Cafesjian Center for the Arts’ exhibition galleries, museum store and visitor center are open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00, and the Center closes on state holidays. From April 1 through October 31, the museum store also opens Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 to 18:00. The Center is at 10 Tamanyan Street.

Construction of the Cascade began in the 1980s, then stopped after the 1988 Armenian earthquake and the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union. Revitalization began in 2002.

Matenadaran

Matenadaran’s museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:50. It does not work on Sundays, Mondays, holidays or remembrance days. If you are planning to visit, check the official site before you go.

The library and reading room have separate hours: the library is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, while the reading room is open on those days from 10:00 to 21:00.

Keep the end of the day flexible after your museum or Cascade visit. Vernissage is an outdoor market in Yerevan, and a stroll there can round out a day spent between the city’s central sights.
